Ian Johnston CBE DL QPM BSc (Hons) Chief Constable - British Transport Police 2001 -2009
Born in 1945, Ian Johnston joined the Metropolitan Police in 1965. During his MPS career he served in uniform and CID Departments, as well as the Regional Crime Squad, the Crime Policy Department and the Public Order Department. He was Staff Officer to the former Commissioner Lord Imbert CVO QPM JP.

A Bramshill Scholar he obtained a First Class Honours Degree in Social Administration at the London School of Economics 1982. He attended the Senior Command Course in 1989 before moving to Kent County Constabulary, as an Assistant Chief Constable in charge of Administration and Supply, and later Operations.

Returning to the MPS in August 1992 as Deputy Assistant Commissioner, in March 1994 he was appointed Assistant Commissioner for South East London with responsibility for the Crime Policy Portfolio for the whole of London. Appointed Assistant Commissioner Central London in January 1999, he had responsibility for policing large events in London, & major demonstrations. In 2000, Mr Johnston took on a new role as Assistant Commissioner Territorial Policing, which included overseeing the 32 London Boroughs, as well as control of Operational Support Units at New Scotland Yard.

He was appointed Chief Constable of British Transport Police (BTP) on 1 May 2001.

A member of the ACPO Crime Business Area in March 2005 was reappointed Chair. He is a Vice President of Police Mutual Assurance Society, Chair of the Police Sport UK Cycling Committee, companion of the Chartered Institute of Management, and a trustee of the Suzy Lamplugh Trust. He was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Science Degree by City University in November 2007. He was appointed Representative Deputy Lieutenant for the London Borough of Camden in January 2008.

In the New Years Honours 1995 he was awarded the Queens Police Medal, and in the Birthday Honours 2001 he was awarded the CBE.
