Ian McPherson Chief Constable Norfolk Constabulary
Mr McPherson started his policing career at Lancashire Constabulary in 1979 and served in a variety of roles including CID, uniformed operations and public order policing up to the rank of Inspector.

As Superintendent he led a Corporate Change Programme prior to taking charge of operational policing for the Blackpool and Fylde division. He was later promoted to Divisional Commander, covering the Local Authority areas of Burnley, Pendle and Rossendale.

Throughout his service Mr McPherson has maintained a commitment to professional learning, which provided him with opportunities to examine methods of policing in the US, Australia and the Middle East in order to assess their suitability for adoption within Lancashire Constabulary. This commitment led to the successful completion of an MBA at the University of Central Lancashire and a diploma in Criminology at Cambridge University.

In April 2001, Mr McPherson was appointed as Assistant Chief Constable in Merseyside Police. His portfolio included responsibility for Operations and developing the delivery of the neighbourhood policing style throughout the organisation. He also had responsibility for the force’s Calls and Response function.

After three years in Operations, Mr McPherson moved to take command of the Corporate Development portfolio, including developing the strategic direction for the force.

In September 2005 Mr McPherson was appointed Deputy Chief Constable in North Yorkshire Police where one of his main responsibilities was to oversee Corporate Development and Performance playing a pivotal role in implementing Neighbourhood Policing within North Yorkshire.

He currently sits on the ACPO Drugs Committee holding specific responsibility for the ACPO Drugs Sub Committee-Young Persons portfolio and on the ACPO Citizen Focused Policing Sub Group, where the strategy development of Neighbourhood Policing is advanced.
